Intel STS
   


Intel STS 2007 Finalists meet with U.S. Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings, and U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney.  The Intel STS is a program of the Society for Science & the Public.

     
   

Student Entry Preparation

The deadline is 8:00 p.m. ET, November 18, 2009.

Students should write the Research Report first, as early as possible, and then complete the Entry Form. Completing the paper and reflecting on work can influence essay answers positively.

The following items must be included with your entry or mailed separately, as noted, so that they arrive by the deadline (8:00 p.m. ET, November 18, 2009). Please request these items early in consideration of the time constraints of teachers, advisors, Supervising Scientists and guidance staff.

  • A recommendation by up to three teachers, using Entry Form Part III.
  • Students who did any portion of their under a Supervising Scientist must submit Entry Form Part IIA, completed by the scientist.
  • An official high school transcriptusing Entry Form Part IV.
  • Students should also review their project for required Supplemental Form(s) submission, conferring with scientists as necessary.

Deadline & Selection Process

After reviewing entries for completeness and accuracy, all Research Reports, Entry Forms, transcripts, and test scores are evaluated and judged by professionals in each scientific dicipline.

All Project Reports are read; all Entry Forms, transcripts and standardized test scores are reviewed and checked.

The Intel STS selection process consists of:

  • Evaluation of Research Report by three or more scientists, mathematicians, or engineers;
  • Evaluation of Entry Form, any required Supplemental Forms and documents, including recommendations provided by teachers and supervising scientists illustrating the student's promise as a creative scientist;
  • Evaluation of the official high school transcript, relative standing in graduating class, if known, and standardized test scores
  • Selection of Semifinalists and Finalists by the judges, using all available entry evidence, with greatest weight given to the Research Report

Announcing Semifinalists and Finalists

Semifinalists and Finalists will be announced beginning at 3:00 p.m., ET, on the pulic announcement dates below. They will include each student's full name, age, school, city, state and project title.

January 13, 2010, 300 semifinalists will be named. Semifinalists and their high school principals are notified by mail.

January 27, 2010, 40 finalists (selected from among the 300 semifinalists) will be named. Finalists may also be notified by telephone.

Intel Science Talent Institute

The 40 Intel Science Talent Search finalists will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC to attend the Science Talent Institute, which takes place from March 11-17, 2010. The five-day visit will include the final in-depth interview process, visits to historic sites and cultural institutions and meetings with leading scientists and engineers.

Intel STS Finalists will exhibit their research to the public and will have an opportunity to exchange ideas and insights with each other, as well as illustrious members of the scientific researc community. Participation in the Intel Science Talent Intstitute is a requirement of the competition. The Intel Science Talent Institute culminates in a black-tie banquet honoring the forty finalists, to be held March 16, 2010. The evening will conclude with the announcement of the top ten Intel scholarship winners of the 69th annual Science Talent Search.
