Give to Science Day is a one-day fundraising effort to help the Society build on science in the U.S., as exemplified by SSP's mission to inform, educate, and inspire.
Last year, the Society raised about $4,000 from more than 100 donors. The 2012 goal is $5,000 in 24 hours on Friday, November 9.
Inform
Alexandra Witze, Contributing Editor at Science News, was named the 2013 Award for Distinguished Science Journalism in the Atmospheric and Related Sciences from the American Meteorological Society for her article, "Rivers in the Sky." Read more.
Educate
Scientists who study the brain have been tapping into the world of magic to learn how its tricks fool our minds. Emerging in just the past five years, this new discipline is often called neuromagic. Read more.

The Society's award-winning Science News for Kids has launched a new tagging system for articles designed to make it easier for teachers to connect real-world articles with academic curricula. SSP has worked with science teachers to classify articles by subject matter, making it easy for teachers, parents and students to find relevant stories. Articles will continue to be catalogued in the future.

After an intense week-long competition, 2012 Broadcom MASTERS finalists got to experience an Innovation Day leading up to the award ceremony. Part of the day included finalists working in teams to learn basic computer programming in order to improve the classic game, “Snake.”

The Society welcomes two new members to its Board of Trustees.
Vivian Schiller isChief Digital Officer and Senior VP of Education at NBC News. She served as CEO of NPR, as well as Senior VP of NYTimes.com. Schiller was also the first general manager of Discovery Times Channel.
Paul Maddon was a finalist in the Society's 1977 ISEF and STS, and the founder of Progenics Pharmaceuticals. He is a M.D., Trustee at Columbia University, and co-founder of the Westchester (NY) Science and Engineering Fair.
The Society announced the appointment of Eva Emerson as editor in chief, and Matt Crenson as managing editor of the Science News family of publications.
These moves come as SSP begins to carry out a new digital strategy initiative aimed at broadening its audience for science-related news and information.
Science News won a 2012 Media Industry News Editorial & Design award for coverage of the Higgs discovery. The award recognizes excellence in content and design among consumer and business-to-business media brands.
